A Third Way - Israelis and Palestinians
as Neighbors
A documentary movie, and a movement: courageous people on the ground
in the West Bank/Judea.
"The land doesn't belong to us, we belong to the land."
- Rabbi Menachem Froman
“A Third Way” is the only feature film on the unique "settler rabbi for peace," Rabbi Menachem Froman, Z'L. It also focuses on West Bank Israelis and Palestinians who are inspired by his work (including the activist Ali Abu Awwad, the founder of Roots -Judur - Shorashim) - and who continue his courageous activism right now in the West Bank/Judea.
We have edited a new version of "A Third Way" - and your house of worship, school or university, NGO or any other organization can host a powerful Impact Screening/Discussion Event. How can the world move towards peace in Israel/Palestine now? Our event is a screening, followed by a moderated discussion on the movie, or even including an "action plan" by your community. The impact event includes participation by "A Third Way" director Harvey Stein, who can answer questions about the movie or his experiences making it. You can design your unique event together with us - which can include participation by handpicked local guests you select. You can decide to focus the discussion on Rabbi Froman and his inspiring path, or also to bring in current political implications of his work. (And we have a Discussion Guide available to help planning). |
What would Rabbi Froman say if he were with us today?
In 2022, our Holy Land continues to be a place of great suffering and conflict. "A Third Way" is the ideal jumping off point for a Jewish or other community - to honestly discuss and debate the complex situation between Israel and Palestinians, to work together to find possible paths to a better future. And this includes left and right wing people working together: "It takes two wings to fly", as Nahum Pachenik, one of Froman's students said.
A "Third Way" event can be planned to bring different communities together to get to know each other more - for example, an event could be hosted jointly by a Jewish organization and a Moslem or Christian organization - and the viewers on Zoom or in a screening room can be a mixed group from both communities.
Besides spending more than five years making "A Third Way", and getting to know all the incredible activists in it, Harvey Stein is an Israeli-American activist himself - frequently attending events of Roots-Shorashim-Judur (founded by students of Rav Froman) and innovative peace organization A Land for All. He is prepared to participate in a discussion that focuses on details of a specific future two-state confederation, or other configuration.
Our Impact Campaign - with over 40 screening events that have taken place already - in the United States, Europe, and Israel - is designed to inspire dialogue and hope, for diverse audiences and communities around the world.
We believe the universal medium of movies can be a crucial catalyst in the struggle for social and political change.

In 2005, Rabbi Froman went to Gaza to protest the evacuation of Jews there - he saved Torahs before Israeli soldiers destroyed synagogues there. He believed that no one - not Israelis or Palestinians - should be evicted from their homes in the pursuit of peace. Can religion be a deep connecting factor between Jews and Moslems and others? What political arrangements might be implicit in some of the views of the open-minded Israelis or Palestinians in our story? Do you believe in such dialogue as takes place in “A Third Way”? What might such dialogue accomplish? What might be its limitations? Do you think the United States government should play a role in helping create a solution to the problems in Israel/Palestine? What about the the role of American Jews? Can you imagine a workable solution to the difficult situation in Israel/Palestine? What would it be like? Do you think it's likely such a solution will occur? Why or why not? |

Testimonials from Preview Screenings:
Director Harvey Stein's powerful narrative conveys to us the profound empathy and hopefulness of Rabbi Froman's approach, without losing sight of the profound cynicism and mistrust between the two communities. In this sense, it is a 'balanced" film and a very good basis for a dialogic, peace building program.
- Rabbi Andrea Cohen-Kiener, Temple Israel (and Compassionate Listening Project), Greenfield, MA
“A Third Way” drew a diverse audience in what is otherwise a very politically divided campus. Refreshing to see a truly unique perspective, students were amazed to see the strides that the featured individuals have made in coexistence. “A Third Way” broke down the dichotomy of "us and them" that too often prevails here. Our post-screening discussion with director Harvey Stein was extremely thought provoking and exposed students both to tough questions and innovative ways forward. Kol Hakavod for this inspirational film!
- Marissa Young, Aryeh (Columbia University Students Association for Israel)
Although I did not agree with all that was said...there is something magical about the film and it conveys a picture of hope.
- Head of the Political Section, Embassy of Israel in Ireland
Extremely moving - a graphic, well-paced, personal visual of both brutality and heartbreak, warmth and friendship, politics and humanity, the possibilities and desire to reach the next/future generations in a constructive manner, not by politics alone, but by friendship and dialogue.
- Ron, audience member
Bring this documentary to your synagogue, mosque, church, or local community center... We did, and the impact of the story and the opportunity to discuss the film's themes with the director left a lasting impression on the audience that we must support such grassroots efforts to bring a real and lasting peace to all the inhabitants of the Holy Land.
